Hi Everyone

It's a busy few days here at the Rising Sun, with not one, not two, not five, but FOUR events this weekend for us to tell you about

On Friday, we bring you STAND-UP CINEMA

Screenings of the best locally made film and video plus rarely seen classics, obscure documentaries, cult independents and overlooked modern gems. Stand-Up Cinema is a collaboration between The Rising Sun Arts Centre and Real Time Video. To get your film shown at the next Stand-Up Cinema contact Real Time at [email protected]

This month's main feature is STILL THE ENEMY WITHIN (Owen Gower 2014)

In 1984, a conservative government under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher declared war on Britain's unions, taking on the strongest in the country, the National Union of Mineworkers. Still the Enemy Within is a unique insight into one of recent British history's most dramatic events: the 1984-85 British Miners' Strike. No experts. No politicians. Thirty years on, this is the raw first-hand experience of those who lived through Britain's longest strike documenting the highs and lows of that life-changing year.

It'll cost you a paltry £4 on the door.  Short Films start at 7.30. If starts showing at 8.00 pm

On Saturday lunchtime we bring you CLASSICAL FOR CHARITY

Classical For Charity is a series of classical and jazz concerts at The Rising Sun Arts Centre, performed by local musicians and hosted by local pianist and piano teacher Maija Tuomi-Nikula.

Come and support us by enjoying top-quality, rarely heard music in a great, relaxed atmosphere without having to pay enormous ticket prices!

This time Classical for Charity brings you SECRETS OF THE NORTH

Secrets of the North is an afternoon of Nordic and Scandinavian music, performed by pianist Maija Tuomi-Nikula. Most of the music will be from Finland, which is Maija's native country. The audience will also be treated to a few rarely heard Icelandic Folk Dances and some of the more well-known works of the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg

We're open at 12.30pm for a 1pm start Tickets cost £3 as usual, and of course, there are some lovely refreshments available at the bar.

On Saturday evening we have another helping of BANDORAMA

The third saturday of the month?  The third saturday of the month at a certain venue in Reading? Surely that means another helping of one of the best band nights in town.  By the way, it happens to look like this...

HEAD OF STEAM
Usually a four piece-but for this weekend they're a duo.  From what we have heard, they remind us of that time when 'indie' guitar pop-when it was really a dirty word.  Think Wolfhounds/Jazz Butcher

OCEAN RUINS
From that Newbury.  Your fave new two piece.  Fierce-almost angst ridden.Like Patti Smith or Karen O on a hot sunny Sunday afternoon.

KHAMSINA
The voice of an angel and great songs that sound like they should be on daytime radio.

RICH WRIGHT
Club Velocity gig goer legend in debut gig shocker.   Do.  Not.  Miss.

We're open at 8pm, and it'll cost you £5 on the door or £4.40 in advance from www.wegottickets.co.uk.

On Sunday MILONGA SIMPATICA brings you TANGO SELECT

Tango Select play classic tangos and milongas from the golden age of tango and others that are less well known, plus a few vals to make a thoroughly enjoyable mix of music familiar and new. Organised into tandas the band plays songs that are perfect for dancing to but are also great for anyone who loves the music.

We'll be open from 4.30pm-8pm  And it'll cost you a paltry £8. Join us.

That’s everything for another week, just to remind you that we are, as always, at 30 Silver Street, Reading, RG1 2ST (If you pop it into your satnav or Google, we shall magically appear!)

Have a nice weekend!
