Hi Everyone

Every cloud has a silver lining!  While the weather tends to get slightly colder in January, the evenings get brighter.  Sometimes at this time of year, the sun rises as early 9.30am and if conditions are favourable it can sometimes set as late as 1.30 in the afternoon.  Not only that, but we at the Rising Sun, have a full weekend to be telling you about!

On Friday, we bring you STAND-UP CINEMA

Screenings of the best locally made film and video plus rarely seen classics, obscure documentaries, cult independents and overlooked modern gems. Stand-Up Cinema is a collaboration between The Rising Sun Arts Centre and Real Time Video. To get your film shown at the next Stand-Up Cinema contact Real Time at [email protected].

This month's main feature is IF (Lindsey Anderson, 1968)

We're proud to be showing Anderson’s savage satire on Englishness and public schooling won the Palme d'Or at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival. It features an incendiary performance from Malcolm McDowell (pre-Clockwork Orange) as Mick Travis, an equally authority-averse lead character, in an undisputed classic of British cinema.  The film which launched Malcolm McDowell's lengthy career (and to a lesser extent, Robin Askwith...)

It'll cost you a paltry £4 on the door.  Short Films start at 7.30. If starts showing at 8.00 pm.

On Saturday, it's time for BANDORAMA

The third saturday of the month?  The third saturday of the month at a certain venue in Reading? Surely that means another helping of one of the best band nights in town.  This month's thrilling instalment is a very special occasion celebrating the birthday of local musical luminary Luisa Garcia and also in aid of www.charge.co.uk her chosen charity

Some legendary local acts will be reforming for the occasion.  By the way, this particvular soiree is expected to be slightly busy, soyou might want to come down a little bit early

THE SAND CREEK MASSACRE
Splendid fellows, brave heroes, Reading legends in their time.  And for Luisa's birthday, they are back for one night only.

MAKE SHAPES NOT WAR
This is the new musical adventure from Charlie O’Connor (formerly of Screama Ballerina).

SULLIVAN
Not only do they know some great tricks with ping-pong balls, but they were also Berkshire's finest skate-punk outfit of all-time.  They are back for one night only on special offer

LAWRENCE PIDDOCK
New Romney Baptist Church 1994 Table Tennis champion and erstwhile Monkey Bob frontman in solo shenanagians

You might be interested to know this is an all ages gig.  Everybody's welcome!

We'll be open at 7.45pm.  And it'll cost you £5 on the door to get in (£4 in advance from www.wegottickets.com).

(All proceeds will be going to www.chargesyndrome.org.uk)

Finally on Sunday, we have MILONGA SIMPATICA

A small, friendly afternoon milonga aimed at giving people a chance to dance tango in a relaxed and stress-free environment. Good company, tea and cakes are provided.  A nice way to wind down the weekend!

We'll be open from 4.30pm-8pm  And it'll cost you a paltry £6. Join us.

That’s everything for another week, just to remind you that we are, as always, at 30 Silver Street, Reading, RG1 2ST (If you pop it into your satnav or Google, we shall magically appear!)
